HIPAA COMPLIANCE - Privacy and Security
Today's healthcare organizations are required to implement a series of administrative mandates to protect health information privacy. It is the duty of each healthcare organization to have a designated privacy officer who is responsible for workforce training and development, and the maintenance of administrative, technical and physical safeguards including: compliance and sanction processes; and proper documentation of compliance with DoD 6025.18-R Health Information Privacy Regulation and the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.
Penalties for violating the new requirements can be severe. Military personnel who fail to comply with federal, DoD, and local information security policies or procedures may be found to be in violation of Article 92, Uniform Code of Military Justice. Civilian employees may face administrative disciplinary action for violations. Failure to comply with HIPAA can result in civil and criminal penalties up to $1.5 million and ten years in prison.
